Dear All
It was World Book Day recently and this got me thinking about what I am reading at the moment and what reading means to me. Before I had children I used to devour books, chomping my way through one after the other. When our son arrived the book reading carried on to start with - the hours spent breast feeding meant I could pretty much still indulge my passion for reading. That soon stopped when our daughter came along. I just didn't have that luxury of cosy uninterrupted feeding sessions as I had a toddler to entertain too! I would describe this phase of my reading life as pretty barren.
Recently, green shoots have been emerging again. And my reading has broadened in a way I would never have imagined! I get to read with the children - my daughter's current favourite is a french children's book we picked up on holiday there about Les P'tibouts. We look at the pictures and she likes me to tell her the words in French. She loves the sound of the words and repeating them.
And I'm enjoying discovering the delights of children's literature with my son - we are half way through Roald Dahl's Big Friendly Giant and both look forward to finding out what happens next each time we snuggle under the covers together. It's great to hear him laughing at books, asking questions about them, keen to understand how the characters relate to each other and where the plot is going.
Then, I get to choose my own books and read in the bath or bed. I love to be whisked away to another place for half an hour or so. I have just finished The Outcast by Sadie Jones. This was actually pretty challenging and not uplifting to read in many places but I enjoyed reading it. Being whisked away doesn't always have to be to a better place, it can be to a worse place, which makes you appreciate what you have :) all the more
