We're often asked whether it's best to choose a suitcase or rucksack on wheels for a child. Here we weigh up the pros and cons of both to help make your decision easier.

Rucksacks on Wheels |
- usually roomier than a rucksack, but check the dimensions and capacity to compare like for like
- often sturdier and more robust meaning a suitcase is likely to last longer than a rucksack on wheels
- can open out flat - if you want to keep clothes in the case while you are travelling this is sometimes easier as you can see things more easily without messing them up
- younger children will probably find a suitcase on wheels easier to handle than a rucksack on wheels and may not use the rucksack feature as, once packed, the bag may be too heavy for them to carry
- there are more suitcases for children available to buy and therefore more variety of design to choose from
|
- appeal to children who like rucksacks but sometimes tire of carrying their load
- easy top opening access - great to get at things easily when on the move - can delve down instead of having to open up flat
- often have useful side & front pockets for storing things you might need en route without having to open everything up
- usually lighter than a suitcase
- best of both worlds - a rucksack when you want it to be, and like a trolley suitcase when you want it to be
- often cheaper
- frees hands up to carry other things & open doors
